Captain Tom and I resume our Great Loop adventure, after taking a two-month break. On Monday morning, January 31, 2022, we left Dog River to cross Mobile Bay. Leaving home was hard for me, and I am still a bit weepy. I will miss my family—especially a little man that seems to change daily.
We couldn’t ask for better weather to cross the bay. The water was like glass. I hope and pray the Gulf of Mexico crossing will be this easy. The only waves were from other boats. I kept my eye out for dolphins or sea turtles but alas, nothing. Not even sea birds were out. After crossing the bay, we entered the Gulf Intercoastal Waterway. We did have a couple of dolphins swim alongside Lollipop for a few minutes. But I couldn’t get a photo. We had planned to stop at Lulu’s, Jimmy Buffet’s sister’s restaurant, but it was closed until February.
After a five-and-a-half-hour cruise, we finally stopped at The Wharf Marina in Orange Beach, AL. Captain Tom did an excellent job at a stern in docking. We used the marriage saver’s radio headsets and had a smooth docking. Believe it or not, we are one of the smallest vessels at this marina.
We planned on staying at this marina for a few days to let a weather front pass through the area. After docking, the captain and I went exploring. There are a lot of restaurants and shops within walking distance—also, a lot of boat porn for the captain. We have had no problem getting our steps in for the day. On the way back from dinner that night, we ran into a raccoon on the docks. He stopped for a moment to look at us looking at him, but not long enough for me to get a photo. But, I was able to get a shot at this blue heron in front of Lollipop.
As we wait out a couple of rainy days, we have many boat projects to work on. With all the restaurants around, we will not be hungry. Next up on the agenda is to head to Pensacola, FL, and meet with some old friends. Ta Ta for now.
